How important is a marketing strategy?

A marketing strategy is something that many of my clients haven't even considered when approaching the marketing for their business. Marketing strategies are seen as something only big businesses need to do, with their big budget marketing campaigns and multiple marketing channels, it would seem right that they need to be super structured and organised, right?


But what about small businesses?


You may be surprised to hear that it is absolutely just as important for a small businesses to build a marketing strategy. After all, a strategy is needed to:


1) Identify your target audience - build a picture of your 'ideal customer'

2) Analyse and research how you can reach your ideal customer - what social media channels do they use? Do they use social media at all?

3) Build a step-by-step plan for content and social media posts, especially around product/service launches or special events

4) Allows you to build and stick to your brand guidelines, so you can maximise the impact your brand can have on your audience

5) And, most importantly, it will help you to create your sales 'funnel'.


I know what you're thinking, you've seen about fifty video ads on facebook, offering to build you a 'sales funnel' and you feel confused as hell about the whole thing! Well, don't fear, the 'funnel' strategy is actually a simple concept. You are essentially streamlining your website, creating a clear, captivating homepage with strong calls to action. By using bold and creative copy, you can guide your audience to take certain steps through your various channels and through your website, leading them to take action. I will write another blog post about 'funnels' and explain in a bit more depth, keep an eye out.





Small businesses almost have to be more strategic in the way they market themselves, otherwise they risk being drowned out, lost in the ever growing 'crowd' of businesses vying for attention online, and don't forget, you're up against companies willing to throw £000's at digital marketing campaigns!






The takeaway from this is, yes, it's important to build your own marketing strategy, no matter how big or small your business is, BUT, it doesn't have to be a big scary experience.
